John Galen Howard collection, 1884-1931 (bulk 1891-1927).

Comprised of correspondence, project records, drawings, and photographs documenting the commercial, governmental, educational, and residential buildings designed by Howard. Includes work completed as the architect for the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition and the University of California, Berkeley. Contains numerous other projects, such as the Gregory residences, the Berkeley Public Library, and the San Francisco Civic Auditorium. Also includes drawings by French architect Emile Benard, completed for the Phoebe Apperson Hearst competition. Although Howard was a founding member of the University of California Architecture department, there are no related records in the collection.

A leader in the American Renaissance Movement, with special interest in the Beaux-Arts style, John Galen Howard came to California in 1892-1893. He was chosen to execute the Hearst plan for the University of California, Berkeley, and later founded the School of Architecture at Berkeley.
